🇬🇧 I dedicate this post to the heroes of our southern Slavic neighbors — the Czechs; both civilians and resistance fighters involved in Operation Anthropoid, which aimed to eliminate a representative of the German occupiers — the Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, Reinhard Heydrich (may he rot in hell). This act brought about harsh reprisals which, while not unusual in Nazi-occupied Poland, marked the greatest German atrocity of World War II in the Czech lands.
Our neighbors remember what happened — near the Orthodox Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, where Czech soldiers made their last stand, there is a pub dedicated to them. This time, together with my friends, we managed to visit Krcma u Parasutistu — the Paratroopers’ Tavern — a place with excellent food and a warm, family-like atmosphere, serving Czech cuisine. Yes, we are living in the present, and it’s worth mentioning this place despite the martyrology surrounding it.
The next day, we entered the crypt where the last defenders of the monastery made their final stand — poisoned with gas, flooded with water, they fought to the last breath. Facing capture, they took their own lives. The only one captured died en route to the hospital. This, unfortunately, was what German law and order looked like in occupied Europe.
In retaliation, around five thousand Czechs were murdered — members of the Sokol organization, residents of Lidice and Ležáky — children, women, and men regardless of age, as well as probably others whose stories I don’t even know due to lack of access to all sources.

WeszliÅ›my dzieÅ„ później do krypty, gdzie ostatni z osaczonych w klasztorze obroÅ„ców stoczyli swój ostatni bój – podtruwani gazem, zalewani wodÄ… walczyli do ostatniego tchu kiedy w obliczu pojmania odebrali sobie życie, jedyny pojmany zmarÅ‚ w transporcie do szpitala.

Summary:
– Lidice, Lezaki and murdered Czech patriots – we will never forget as a Poles who visited this place!
– I still believe that nowadays, Europeans of different nationalities should learn their history based on the truth — even if it’s painful — and that includes young Germans. Not to blame them for their grandparents’ actions, but to make sure such things are never repeated. It’s better to shake hands and share a beer than to shoot at each other.
– For my part, the only thing I can say is this: yes, I like the Germans I’ve met — and I’ve met a wide range of people, like Alex and Andreas, with whom I drank beer and played WFB, or incredibly empathetic people like Natalie and Isabel, with whom I had the pleasure to work.
– My great-grandmother was Austrian or German — I don’t know if I’ll ever find out for sure, though I’d love to, just out of curiosity. Still, I feel entirely connected to Polish nationality and culture.
Podsumowanie:
Lepiej sobie podać rÄ™kÄ™ i napić siÄ™ piwa, niż do siebie strzelać.
I have just been reading about this just last week, to visit the actual site must have been pretty moving, it’s good that atrocities like these are not forgotten, thanks for the post and well done with those photos.
This place is full of memory. It’s great that they care about it and access is for free. Plus it’s close to Old Town and city center. Thank you mate, tried my best as historia magistra vitae est 🙂.
